Chocolate buttercream is a classic frosting that pairs well will most cake flavors. This is a simple recipe much like my vanilla buttercream with the addition of cocoa powder for the chocolate goodness.
First, cream some butter until light and fluffy. If you want to make a crusting buttercream use half butter and half shortening. This will make the frosting crust or stiffen up after it has a chance to sit.
Whisk the powdered sugar and cocoa powder together. Slowly add the cocoa and powdered sugar mixture to the butter so it doesn’t fly up all over the place. It will be a bit crumbly but it will all come together. Keep the mixer going and add vanilla and salt.
It will still be a bit dry. To solve this, add in some cream just until it all comes together which is about a tablespoon or so. Continue to mix until it is all smooth and pretty.
Now transfer to a piping bag if needed and frost your cake. This frosting also makes a great filling all by itself or combine it with a little caramel drizzle and some pecans and you’ve got a turtle filling. Or some marshmallows and nuts for a rocky road filling. I could go on but you get it. So many options!
This frosting is a go to classic you must try. Now go get your chocolate buttercream on!
